Estonian Broadcasting Museum, a non-profit organization, was founded on April 29, 1999 by Estonian Radio, Association of Estonian Broadcasters, Estonian Television, the municipality of Türi and Estonian Broadcasting Centre, who felt the need to preserve the history of Estonian broadcasting culture.
The small town of Türi in Järva county was chosen as the location for the museum, because the radio station of the State Broadcasting Company operated here from 1937 to 1941. The radio broadcasting station in Türi was completed in 1937 and it was the most modern station of the time in Europe and its free-standing antenna towering exactly 196.6 meters high with it’s three support beams was unique in design.
The main activity of the Estonian Broadcasting Museum is the collection, research and dissemination of broadcasting history, along with advancement of media knowledge and skills through exhibition activities and education. The museum covers the subject from the beginning of Estonian national broadcasting in 1926 to the present day, based on a rigid collection policy.
The first permanent exhibition was opened to the general public on the 75th anniversary of Estonian national broadcasting on December 18, 2001. Over the years the museum has offered it’s visitors exhibitions introducing the history of both radio and television broadcasting, sometimes even outside the museum facilities, along with guided tours, lessons and programs in the museum, and organized various events. Altogether more than 100,000 guests have taken part in our activities.
We strive to generate interest in the history of broadcasting in Estonian and offer attractive exhibitions, events and programs that develop media knowledge and skills. When providing history and media knowledge, we consider the interests of specific target groups.
The current members of the non-profit organization are the Estonian Public Broadcasting, Association of Estonian Broadcasters, Levira AS, the municipality of Türi and Broadcasting Museum Supporters Association.
We are ready to cooperate with everyone interested in the history, preservation and mediation of the field.
On April 29, 2024, the founders, members, supporters and friends of the non-profit organization are welcome to the museum. The concert on the day of the celebration will be performed by the Cellogirls group, and the birthday cake will be provided by Päikseline catering. The event is invite only.
